University and students celebrate Fairtrade status

Vice-Chancellor Professor Boucher with a representative of the Fairtrade Foundation and the President of the Students' Union

On Friday 29 October a representative of the Fairtrade Foundation presented a certificate of Fairtrade accreditation to Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Boucher and the President of the Students' Union, Jamie Bristow. The University and its Union of Students have joined forces to achieve recognition as a `Fairtrade University´.

Fairtrade accreditation means that the University and Union have achieved the Foundation's five goals, which are in summary:

  • A Fairtrade policy adopted
  • Fairtrade products for sale in all campus shops and used in all cafes, restaurants and bars on campus where available
  • Fairtrade foods served at all meetings and conferences
  • Commitment made to campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus
  • A Fairtrade steering group established

Beyond meeting the five goals, both University and Union are committed to further extending their active support for Fairtrade principles and products, including new conditions in external catering contracts and an ongoing programme of internal Fairtrade publicity among both students and staff.
