Dr Emanuel Gomes

Dr. Emanuel Gomes is a Lecturer in Strategy and International Business at the University of Sheffield, Management School, whose specialist teaching is in, International Business, Strategic Management, Managing International Strategic Alliances, Mergers and Acquisitions. He is the Director of the MSc International Business and the BA International Business Management programmes.

He is the module leader of the MGT6052 International Business Strategy (MSc) and of the MGT231 Strategy (BA) modules. With the objective of bridging theory and practice, he continuously endeavours and strives to make every teaching and learning experience theoretical sound and as practical and applicable as possible. To this end, he uses teaching and learning technologies in these modules. Following a constructivist teaching and learning approach, he involves students in authentic problem-solving and decision-making projects with the objective to help them develop complex problem solving skills as well as domain expertise.

He is the author of three books ‘Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances: Understanding the Process’, ‘Acquisitions in the UK Car Industry: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Merger Processes.’ and ‘Mergers and Acquisitions as Strategic Methods of Business Development in the Global Automobile Industry: An Analysis of Five Cases’. He is the author of the Strategic Planning Software (www.planning-strategy.com). He is also the author of several papers published in international refereed journals. Before pursuing an academic career, he had previously worked in the automotive, HR and the not-for-profit sectors. He has provided consultancy to companies operating in the automotive, construction, international trade, energy, music, and sports industries.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Business & Technology Association (GBATA) and serves as a Co-chair in the GBATA Conferences. He is a member of the Mergers and Acquisitions Research Interest Committee of the EuroMed Research Business Institute. He serves on Board of Reviewers of the Journal of Global Business and Technology. He has acted as a Scientific Committee member and as a Co-Chair at various international conferences. He also served as a reviewer to various international refereed journals such as the California Management Review, International Marketing Review, the International Journal of Management Reviews, the International Journal of Human Resource Management, the International Studies of Management and Organisation journal, Thunderbird International Business Review, International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management, European Journal of Cross-Cultural Management, and international conferences such as the AIB (Academy of International Business), Global Business & Technology Association, EuroMed Academy of Business, Management of International Business and Economics Systems. He has also served as a reviewer for the Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grants.

His specialty areas are international business strategy, international mergers, acquisitions and strategic alliances, and pedagogical and management software.

Teaching

Consultancy and/or In-Plant Training

British Embassy in Angola/UK TI – March-May 2011
Analysis of the provision of vocational and professional development training in Angola to determine the requirement that stakeholders have in these areas. Findings were presented to suitable British providers, who were encouraged to work with Angolan partners to deliver high-quality and effective education/training solutions. This research was conducted in partnership with the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House). Serck Services - Nov. 2009/Feb. 2010
Leading researcher/consultant – We undertook a Strategic Planning project for Serck Services (a strategic business unit of Unipart) and developed the company’s growth strategy.

MG Motors (former MG Rover) – Jan. 2010/May 2010
We undertook a Strategic Planning project for MG Motors, in which we performed a strategic analysis of the competitive environment in the UK car industry.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with Serck Services – Sep 2010 – Jan 2011
Acting as Senior Knowledge Base executive to develop robust internal structures to improve and develop new marketing practices, embedding them within the current team in order to increase the sales and marketing capability of the company and develop a more sustainable approach for future opportunities.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with Unipart Manufacturing Expert Practices (UMEP) – Sep 2010 – Jan 2011
Acting as Senior Knowledge Base executive to assist UMEP in changing its approach to strategy with the objective of moving from an emergent to a more deliberate strategic planning approach and embed these methodologies to the strategic decision making process of the company.
