Introduction

Literacy has for many years been a distinctive area of educational research in the School of Education at Sheffield. It involves a group of 14 academic staff, and some 20 research students, all of whom are active in literacy research. Members have international or national reputations.

There have been several lines of research in recent years including: Academic literacy in HE; Adult literacy; Assessment; Cinema and theatre; Community Literacies; Digital Literacies; Early childhood education; Family literacy; Family numeracy; Gender; Home/school; Initial teaching; Libraries; Linguistics/language; Literacy (generic); Media; Performing arts; Popular culture; Special Needs; Visual literacy

There are well-developed links with users and thriving Masters courses in the areas of literacy, and language and in early childhood education Literacy Research seeks to be an inclusive, creative focus for several lines of high quality literacy and literacy-related research.

Three research groups exist within Literacy Research to support members specific interests and projects
