European Union in the Library and on the Internet

Library everywhere!
Many library resources and services are available from any location at any time via MUSE. This guide will help you find the library and Internet resources you need to study the European Union.


To find books, the best place to start is Star, the library catalogue.
If you want to find material on your reading list then check the Resource Lists for your Department.
There are a number of sites which hold material on the European Union. Western Bank Library holds European Union legal materials; while European Documentation Centre, located at Sheffield Hallam University Learning Centre, provides access to documentation produced by EU institutions.
For current information and the latest research you need to use journals. Increasingly these are available online, and Find It @ Sheffield provides access to subscribed content and scholarly open access titles. Some journals are still available only in printed form, and you should check the library catalogue for these.
To find journal articles by topic, you need to search using databases. Some databases provide access to full text articles electronically, in addition to citations (bibliographic details of articles) and abstracts.
Ebooks are electronic versions of printed books. They differ in that they may be searchable, enable electronic bookmarking, and/or have an online dictionary. All ebooks are on Star, the library catalogue.
Information found on the Web is not always of a good academic standard. For good ‘quality-assured’ links to information suitable for academic use, choose the appropriate subject gateway for your topic.
It is very important that you develop the necessary skills to find information relevant to your studies. There are various online tutorials to help you.
