General useful databases
Census 1981, 1991 and 2001 Access to a wealth of census information including Small Area Statistics for Great Britain.
Digimap Digimap is a service that delivers Great Britain Ordnance Survey map data to U.K. Higher Education. OS digital map data is available for the whole country at a scale of 1:50,000 and for selected areas at larger scales. Most of the Sheffield area is available at a scale of 1:1,250.
Scopus Scopus is an abstracting and index database from Elsevier, designed to provide expert results for the non-expert researcher. Updated daily, Scopus includes the abstracts and cited references of over 15,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 international publishers in the sciences and social sciences.

Scopus allows researchers to search abstracts going back to 1966, whilst references of all articles published since 1996 are also included, offering newly-linked citations across the widest body of articles available including Open Access and electronic-only titles. In addition, Scopus covers 200 million quality web sources, including around 13 million patent records from four patent offices.
NewsBank NewsBank is a full text UK newspaper database, providing online access to news articles in both broadsheet and tabloid newspapers
Web of Knowledge This is a collection of 4 databases covering all subjects. There are three multi-disciplinary citation indexes drawn from over 7,500 international journals, and an index giving access to individual papers from about 4,200 scientific and technical conferences per year.

Human geography databases
ASSIA Covers the whole area of the social sciences from 1987 to date.
EconLit EconLit is a bibliographic database of books, journal articles, dissertations and working papers dealing with all aspects of economics.
IBSS This service provides access to the International bibliography of the social sciences produced by the British Library of Political and Economic Science. It is one of the largest social science databases in the world.
PsycINFO This database is useful for literature on perception, the environment and behaviour.
Sociological Abstracts Available via ProQuest, which is a comprehensive collection of databases covering biological sciences, aquatic sciences, engineering and technology, environmental sciences, materials science, computer science and social sciences.

Physical geography databases
BIOSIS previews BIOSIS previews is the main biological sciences database and a useful source for information on plants, trees, animals, flora and fauna of an area. It covers approximately 7,000 serial titles from across the world and also includes conference papers and book reviews. Coverage is from 1985 to date.

Theses information
Dissertation abstracts Dissertation Abstracts contains abstracts of doctoral and some Masters’ theses on all subjects completed at North American and some non-North American universities.
Index to theses Index to theses includes abstracts to theses on all subjects accepted for higher degrees by British and Irish universities and by the CNAA
Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations A collection of electronic theses and dissertations from Universities around the world.
