Innes Smith Collection

Robert W. Innes Smith (1872-1933) was a graduate of Edinburgh University and a general practitioner in the Brightside area of Sheffield for 33 years. His strong interest in medical history and art brought him some acclaim, and his English-speaking students of medicine at the University of Leyden, published in 1932, is regarded as a model of its kind. Locally, Innes-Smith was highly respected as a medical man and a scholar.

On his death, part of his large collection of books and engravings was acquired for the University. Of the books, some 305 volumes remain from the original collection, some having been sold before the residue came to this Library. There is a strong bias towards medical biography. See also the Innes Smith Medical Portraits Collection and Innes Smith Personal Papers.

There is a copy of the original catalogue available, arranged by broad subject. There is no composite alphabetical listing, although the books are listed in the Library Catalogue (Card Catalogue).
