13. Assistance for customers with additional support requirements

Description of Service

Assistance to users with physical disabilities and customers with additional support requirements who are unable to retrieve material from the shelves themselves or for whom specific areas of the Library are inaccessible for safety reasons or lack of appropriate access. This includes:
  • Loan concessions for registered disabled students
  • Assistance to users with visual impairments in using such equipment as is available
  • Advice on access to the Library and its services
  • Advice on literature searching and library use
  • Assistance in using the Document Supply and Inter-Library Loan Service

Client Groups/Eligibility for Services

All those with a permanent or temporary disability and all those who find it difficult to access the physical Library.

Provider Responsibility

To ensure as far as possible that any disability or physical difficulty accessing the Library does not place a student at a disadvantage in obtaining study material.
Library services will be reviewed regularly to ensure compliance with equality legislation.

User Responsibility

To register with Student Services as appropriate and arrange in advance with the Library for appropriate help at specific times and to make use of other support e.g. non-medical help, that may be available to them. Advice on this can be provided by Student Services.

By arrangement in advance.

Service Statistics/Outputs

A record of work carried out in support of students with disabilities is maintained.

Service Measures

No separate measures, but email and postal enquiries are subject to Service 7, Enquiry Services, and document supply requests to Service 11, Document Supply Service and Inter-library loans.

Dependencies

Suitable physical access routes to libraries.

Feedback and Monitoring

Feedback on specific students and on policy is obtained from the Student Services Department.

Exclusions

Only those students who have registered their disability with Student Services are eligible for this service. It is restricted to University of Sheffield students and staff. Other users with additional support requirements will be assisted on a "best efforts" basis.
