How do I use the lending service?

This guide tells you about borrowing books and other items from the Library.

How many books can I borrow?

This depends on your borrower category:

Borrower category Number of books
Undergraduate 15
Postgraduate 25
NHS staff 25
University staff 35
External borrower 5

How long can I borrow them for?

All books, unless requested by someone else, can be borrowed for the following periods:

Borrower Normal loan period
Full-time taught-course student; external borrower 1 week
Part-time & distance learning taught-course student 2 weeks
Research student; University and NHS staff 4 weeks

Heavily requested items have a shorter loan period of:

Borrower Heavily requested loan period
Full-time taught-course student; research student; University and NHS staff; external borrower 2 days
Part-time & distance learning taught-course student 4 days

Your self-service receipt or the date label in the book will tell you the date your book is due back. Please check this carefully as the item may have been requested by someone else, and have a shorter loan period.

Reference copies of core texts (green bands) cannot be borrowed. This is to ensure that at least one copy of a heavily used textbook stays in the Library.

Can I keep books for longer?

As long as no one has requested the book you can extend the loan by renewing:

  • via the "Library" tab in MUSE
  • via the my account facility on Star
  • by phoning the Renewals Hotline on 0114 222 7200
  • by bringing your UCard/Library Card to any Library counter

If a book is requested by someone else has you may keep it until the due date, but you won't be able to renew it.

What happens when someone requests a book I have on loan?

Usually this means you won’t be able to renew it. However, if another copy of the book is returned by another person sooner, this may mean you can renew your book.

It is essential you check your account regularly to avoid fines, and ensure no-one has reserved the items you have on loan.

How do I check “MyAccount” in MUSE?

Once you have logged into MUSE you can check your Library account by clicking on the “Library” tab. From the box “myLibrary Account” you can view and renew your loans and see details of any charges.

Please note that if you have overdue books on your account any fines incurred on them will display as “potential fines” only. They will be added to your account when you renew or return your loans. If you renew your books online, and the fines added to your account total more than £10, you will be blocked from borrowing any further items until you have brought your fines under this amount.

What if I return my books late?

Fines are charged if you don’t either renew or return your books on time as follows:

Fines on all items are charged at £1 per day
(there is no charge for the first day)

You can still continue to borrow providing you have less than £10 in outstanding charges. We help you to avoid fines by:

  • Emailing you a reminder when your loans are due for return.
  • Providing 24/7 renewal facilities via the “Library” tab in MUSE or the telephone Renewals Hotline on 0114 222 7200.

You can help yourself to avoid fines by:

  • Checking ‘myLibrary Account’ in MUSE and your email box on a regular basis.
  • Renewing promptly, allowing time to return the book if you can’t renew.

Fines can be paid in person at any Library counter or online via ‘myLibrary Account’ in MUSE.

If you have difficulty returning items you have on loan please contact the Library Services Manager at the site from which you borrowed them. Visit http://www.shef.ac.uk/library/collections for contact details.

How do I obtain a book that’s on loan?

Search for the item you want using the Library catalogue. Click on ‘Request’ and enter your Ucard number and PIN.

You can request any item held by the Library. Staff will search for items not on loan and currently on the shelves, but remember it’s usually quicker for you to look for these items yourself. If an item is out on loan we’ll notify you as soon as it becomes available.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Please make sure that you receive Library letters by email so that we can remind you when your loans are due for return and notify you of any requests awaiting collection more quickly. Use the form at http://library.sheffield.ac.uk/open/email.html to sign up now if you haven’t already done so.
