Your self-service receipt or the date label in the book will tell you the date your book is due back. Please check this carefully as the item may have been requested by someone else, and have a shorter loan period.
Reference copies of core texts (green bands) cannot be borrowed. This is to ensure that at least one copy of a heavily used textbook stays in the Library.
Can I keep books for longer?
As long as no one has requested the book you can extend the loan by renewing:
- via the "Library" tab in MUSE
- via the my account facility on Star
- by phoning the Renewals Hotline on 0114 222 7200
- by bringing your UCard/Library Card to any Library counter
If a book is requested by someone else has you may keep it until the due date, but you won't be able to renew it.
What happens when someone requests a book I have on loan?
Usually this means you won’t be able to renew it. However, if another copy of the book is returned by another person sooner, this may mean you can renew your book.
It is essential you check your account regularly to avoid fines, and ensure no-one has reserved the items you have on loan.
How do I check “MyAccount” in MUSE?
Once you have logged into MUSE you can check your Library account by clicking on the “Library” tab. From the box “myLibrary Account” you can view and renew your loans and see details of any charges.
Please note that if you have overdue books on your account any fines incurred on them will display as “potential fines” only. They will be added to your account when you renew or return your loans. If you renew your books online, and the fines added to your account total more than £10, you will be blocked from borrowing any further items until you have brought your fines under this amount.
What if I return my books late?
Fines are charged if you don’t either renew or return your books on time as follows:
