Copyright guide: photocopying for research
Single photocopies of extracts from printed works (e.g. one article from a journal or one chapter from a book) can be made or requested as long as the copy is for research for a non-commercial purpose or private study. Request forms for both the Photocopying and the InterLibrary Request Service include copyright declarations for requesters to sign to confirm that the copy they are requesting is to be used for a non-commercial purpose.
The InterLibrary Request Service can obtain photocopies of items that are to be used for a commercial purpose. An additional charge will be made for this service to cover copyright fees. A copyright declaration should not be signed if the copy required is for a commercial purpose. For further information on the definition of "commercial purpose" see the CLA website:
