How do I get started?

Information for part-time and distance learning students, students on placement, researchers studying at a distance and students with children

When you register as a student at the University of Sheffield, you will receive an introductory pack. This will be mailed to students who are based overseas and who register remotely.

Included in the pack are your UCard and your Novell username and password.

What is my UCard?

Your UCard is, among other things, your Library card. The University delivers services at several sites – the Information Commons, Western Bank Library, St. George´s Library and the Health Sciences Library and your UCard enables you to swipe in at these sites.

Please remember to bring it with you at all times because a "no UCard, no entry" policy operates.

What are my Novell username and password?

These will enable you to access the University´s computer network and electronic resources. For further information, please see Accessing eResources from the Quick links.

How does the Library communicate with me?

We communicate with most of our customers by email as this is quicker, uses no paper and enables us to offer additional services. If you are a registered member of the University, this will normally be your University email address.

However, if it is difficult for you to access your email on a regular basis and you wish to receive correspondence by post, please complete the form here or ask at a Library help point.

Remember to check your email regularly, at least every two days. If you are not going to be able to check it for a significant amount of time, please contact the Library (library@sheffield.ac.uk, telephone (0114) 222 7200) so that your record can be amended.

If you change your address, remember to inform Student Services. Further information about Checking and changing your record is available from the See also box.
