Access and evacuation information for customers with mobility difficulties: St George’s Library

Is the St George´s Library accessible?

Automatic doors provide street level access directly into the SGL.

Accessible parking is available on Portobello Street (Council controlled) or in the University Category B car park across the road from these spaces (at the back of the Sir Frederick Mappin building). Non-designated parking is also available on Mappin Street.

A turnstile entrance is in operation at the St. George´s Library. Library staff will be happy to open the access gate for you on entry and exit.

There is an accessible toilet in the entrance lobby to the Library.

In order to comply with Health and Safety regulations, access is limited to one wheelchair user per upper floor level at any one time. For your safety, if you are a wheelchair user, you will be asked to sign to indicate to which level you intend to go. If another wheelchair user is already on the first floor level, and you are unaccompanied by a Library Support Worker, please ask Library staff to fetch any books you require.

What if the lift breaks down while I am upstairs?

If you require assistance to leave the building, you should either:

• Inform a member of Library staff if there is one nearby.
• Ring the St. George's Library counter for assistance (0114 222-7301) if you have a mobile telephone with you.
• Ask another customer to inform a member of Library staff.

What if I get trapped in the lift?

In this unlikely event, please follow the instructions inside the lift.

Emergency evacuation – where do I go?

If there is a fire, you must not use the lift.

Ground floor

• Wheelchair users
  If you are unable to escape via the normal exit, there is a safe refuge point at the far end of the Library (in the fire exit stairwell), behind the doors opposite the lift.
• Customers with mobility difficulties
  Leave via the normal exit, if possible. (There are stairs on the alternative fire escape at the far end of the Library.)

Levels 1 and 2

• Wheelchair users
  There are 2 refuge points on each of the upper floors, one at the front of the Library and one at the far end. These are both located in the fire exit stairwell. Please note that the ones at the far end (reached by going through the doors opposite the lift) are far more spacious.
• Customers with mobility difficulties
  If you are able to walk down the stairs, please do so. Otherwise make your way to a refuge point (see paragraph above).

Please note:
If you are using a refuge point, please ensure that a member of staff or, in their absence, another Library customer is informed of your location. This is so that the information can be passed on to the person(s) who is to provide assistance.

Where is the Assembly Point?

The Assembly Point depends on which exit you use.
St. George´s Churchyard is for customers leaving via the front door.
St. George´s Category C car park is for customers leaving via the rear fire exits.
