eBook Reader evaluation 2010

Kindle reader

What are eBook Readers?
An ebook reader is a mobile electronic device upon which documents, PDFs, digital books and periodicals can be stored and read. Currently most types of ebook readers use electronic ink technology to display content, ensuring screen readability in bright sunlight. Some devices have integrated dictionaries, annotation and keyword search functionality. eBook readers can be used to provide access to large amounts of reading material in one compact, portable package.

Potential uses and limitations
The ebook reader market is developing rapidly and the application within libraries of this emerging technology has huge potential, although currently the business model for eReaders still centres largely on individual rather than institutional use. This means there is a lack of availability of module specific mobile-ready scholarly ebook content and at this stage it is not possible to access the Library´s ebook collection on its ebook readers due to licence restrictions.

Which eBook Readers were available in the Library?
An Amazon Kindle 2 was available for you to try at Western Bank Library and a Sony Pocket Edition Reader PRS-300 was available at the Information Commons.

Evaluation - did you have your say?
From July to November 2010 we evaluated the potential use of ebook readers within the Library through a trial service. We pre-loaded the Amazon Kindle with some current newspapers, a selection of freely available ebook content and some Library guides and we pre-loaded the Sony Reader with some freely available ebooks and Library guides. Each reader was issued with a USB cable to enable you to download your own content onto the device too. Then we asked you for feedback! If you told us what you thought of our ebook readers you were entered into a prize draw on 6 December 2010 to win your own Kindle or Sony Reader.
