Census data 1981, 1991 & 2001
The following are available from Census data support units:
- CasWeb via MIMAS. Covers several 1991 Census datasets plus 1981 Census Small Area Statistics for Great Britain from the Census Dissemination Unit (CDU), University of Manchester. Aggregate 2001 Census Key Statistics for England and Wales are also now available from CasWeb.
- UK BORDERS via EDINA covering digitised boundary data 1971-2001 from the Census Geography Data Unit, University of Edinburgh.
- Centre for Interaction Data Estimation and Research (CIDER) (replaces CIDS - Census Interaction Data Service), data support unit with the specific remit of providing access to and supporting interaction data sets produced from UK Censuses of Population using WICID (Web Interface to Census Interaction Data).
- Census Microdata Unit from the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research, University of Manchester, providing 1991 & 2001 Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs)

Registration for use locally or remotely
- Login to MUSE & connect to the Library database listings via the Library eResources links (located on the Library tab)
- Select Census data 1981, 1991 & 2001 from the A to Z list. On the Census data page, connect to the Census registration service (CRS) via the CRS Quick link. This provides a one-stop registration giving access to all of the above resources. (Use restricted to research, teaching or personal educational development at the University of Sheffield.)
- Follow the on screen instructions which include the following three steps 1) Provide personal information 2) Review & accept the end user licence 3) Review special conditions applying to use of certain datasets
- An email will then be sent to the address you specified during the registration process. When you receive this email visit the web page it indicates. This will complete your registration for all the Census data support units. The link will remain valid for 28 days
Access
Access is available directly from this page by connecting to your chosen dataset via the links above - you'll be prompted to login to MUSE as necessary. If you have preregistered for the datasets, no further credentials other than your MUSE ones will be needed. To access the Library's eResources collection whether on or off campus, simply log into MUSE & connect via the Library eResources links, located on the Library tab. Alternatively, access via the eResources A to Z links on the Library Web pages & login to MUSE when prompted. For:
- CIDER: Scroll to Getting the data. Select the WCID or required link, followed by the Login using UK Federation (Shibboleth) link
