British and Irish archaeological bibliography (BIAB)
The bibliography contains over 100,000 separate references for relevant publications issued from AD 1695 to the present day. References to material published from 1967 onwards also include abstracts. The database comprises information gathered from several bibliographic sources:
- The Index of archaeological papers produced by the Gomme family between 1892 and 1910. This was a retrospective compilation and it included the works of seventeenth and eighteenth century antiquaries.
- The Archaeological bibliography for Great Britain and Ireland, published by the Council for British
Archaeology (CBA), which provided comprehensive
indexed listings for publications from 1940-80 (originally under the title Archaeological bulletin for the British
Isles) - British archaeological abstracts, also published by the Council for British Archaeology and edited by Cherry Lavell, was a twice-yearly compilation featuring the latest and most significant archaeological publications. It was published from 1968-91.
- The British archaeological bibliography was established as a separate organisation in 1991 and began publication in 1992 following the retirement of Cherry Lavell. BAB become the British and Irish archaeological bibliography in 1997 to reflect the addition of the Irish Heritage Council to the consortium that runs the bibliography.
