Biblical Studies: Jade Phillimore

Name: Jade Phillimore
Course: Biblical Studies and Philosophy
Hometown: Bradford
Favourite thing about Sheffield:
There is always something to do in Sheffield! I also love the fact there are so many parks and 'green' areas right in the middle of such a busy, modern city.
Favourite thing about the University:
Everyone you meet just seems to be really friendly and there is a sense of community.
Favourite thing about your department:
The Biblical Studies department is rather small meaning you can get to know other staff and students well, which helps when you need advice. I also like the fact that the department shares a building with Philosophy, meaning both of my departments are in the same place!
Why you chose your course:
I found it really difficult to choose what to study which is one reason why I chose a dual honours degree, as I could choose two things! At A level I studied Textiles, English Literature and Religious studies, and after initially deciding I wanted to study English and Philosophy at university I changed my mind as I realised I was more interested in Religion. Biblical studies at Sheffield is a highly interdisciplinary course, and is way more than just 'reading the bible' which many people assume is the only thing Biblical studies students do!
Career Aspirations:
I keep changing my mind, but at the moment I want to teach RE. I am not religious myself, but I believe having knowledge about other people's faiths is vital - especially as we are living in an increasingly diverse, multicultural world. Religion often affects many aspects of the world around us – such as morals and politics.
What you hope to achieve as a Student Ambassador for Learning & Teaching:
I think that being a SALT will be a really worthwhile experience, which will contribute towards me developing valuable employability skills such as communication and team work. I believe evidence of skills such as these is particularly important when studying for an Arts & Humanities degree, as they tend not to directly lead to a specific career. I hope that the work we do as SALT's creates a positive, lasting impact on the Arts and Humanities faculty.
Interests/Hobbies/Other activities:
I dislike being alone, so I love doing things with friends! Also I've always had an interest in Ballet, and whilst I don't attend classes at the moment I often still dance around the house in my pointe shoes.
Your top tip for studying:
I find that condensing all your notes for a particular topic on to one page really helps. Colouring everything in and drawing little patterns/pictures also makes the notes more interesting to read and seems to make me remember things better!
