Principles of Assessment and Assessment Criteria

The University is committed to providing fair, consistent and reliable assessment for all students. Following a major Review of Assessment undertaken by the Learning and Teaching Committee, the University has adopted, as part of its Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy a series of 9 Principles of Assessment which apply to all assessment activity.

The University has also adopted Generic Assessment Criteria which are designed to promote consistency and to reflect the standards and competencies which all Sheffield graduates are expected to achieve. The Generic Assessment Criteria provide a framework within which individual academic departments will construct Level- and task-specific assessment criteria for each major method of assessment they employ. It is expected that departmental assessment criteria will be clearly communicated to students, for example via departmental web sites and student handbooks.
