Academic Profile

Originally a Chemistry graduate, completed an MA in Law in 1998. Took up a lectureship in Sheffield School of Law in 2002.

Teaching and Learning

I mainly teach property based subjects such as Equity & Trusts, Intellectual Property and Land Law. The focus is on helping students develop their academic skills as well as their skills for employment. I am personal tutor for all the MA Law students as well as some undergraduate and GDL students.

Canada Health – M. Adcock, A. Burton and P. Odell, Can$30,000: Use of Patents by Governments (1/04 – 9/04)
To prepare a report for Canada Health that was to be used to influence the development of forthcoming Canadian patent legislation. The research for the report was a comparative study looking at compulsory licensing and government use in Australia, France, Germany, Japan, UK, USA and also the EU.

New Zealand Law Foundation – R. Crisman, M. Llewelyn and P. Odell, £15,000: Scoping exercise on the legal implications for New Zealand of Biotechnology and the Human Genome Project (1/03 – 6/03)
To undertake a `scoping exercise´ on the legal implications for New Zealand of Biotechnology and the Human Genome Project, looking primarily at the legal landscape in the UK and EU.

Professional Activities and Recognition

Invited to serve on the College of Reviewers for the Canada Research Chairs Program (2007)
Innovation Fellow for the Faculty of Law. (2004 – 2005)
Worked on a number of knowledge transfer projects within the faculty. In September 2004 visited the universities of Monash, Melbourne and Tasmania on a fact finding trip looking at `third stream´ activities in those universities. Feedback and findings presented in October 2004 to a joint meeting of representatives from both Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University.
Invited by the McGill Centre for IP to participate in a workshop on Health Biotechnology and IP in 2004.
Joint Co-ordinator of the Civil Society Stream of the Global Democracy and the Search for Justice Conference (Sheffield 2003)
Invited by Resources for the Future Foundation to participate in a meeting to advise on proposed changes to the US patent system in 2002.
Invited by the UNDP to give a paper on the Impact of Trade and IPRs on GMOs in 2002.
