Academic Profile

I joined the School of Law in 2003 and was promoted to Reader in 2011. I have published widely on the external relations of the EU, as well as other areas of EU law and politics and UK constitutional law. My first monograph, EU External Relations and Systems of Governance: the CFSP, Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and Migration, was published by Routledge in 2009 and took an interdisciplinary approach to the subject. I have also published related pieces on the law and politics of EU engagement with neighbourhood states in leading journals. My current research focuses on the internal-external synergy in EU law and policy, and democracy promotion by the EU in third countries. A monograph on this topic is scheduled to be published by Routledge in 2012.

I hosted a two-day international conference on EU External Relations Law and Policy in the Post-Lisbon Era in the School of Law in January 2011 which was generously funded by the Modern Law Review and UACES. An edited collection of selected contributions with the same title was published by TMC Asser Press/Springer in November 2011. I also hosted an interdisciplinary workshop on Ethics, Moral Responsibility and Politics of Democracy Promotion: Political Choices for International Actors in Sheffield in January 2010.

Other recent publications cover topics including the EU's democracy promotion methods, the role of the European Court of Justice in the EU’s constitutional order, EU external investment Law, the relationship between EU and International Law (in particular in relation to the ECJ's Kadi case-law), environmental law and developments in UK Constitutional Law.

I am currently the Deputy Head of the School of Law, with specific responsibility for internationalisation. I was previously responsible for developing our extensive network of international exchange links, and encouraging Law students to take the many opportunities Sheffield offers to spend a year studying abroad.

I am the Director of the Sheffield Centre for International and European Law, which hosted the International Law Association (ILA) British branch conference in 2011, and a member of the Centre for the Study of Law in Society.

I was awarded the title of Senate Award Fellow in July 2010 in recognition of my efforts to internationalise the student experience in Law and improve the giving of feedback within large-scale modules in Law.

I am a Committee Member and Trustee of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies and an Honorary Fellow of the Europa Institute, University of Edinburgh.

Qualifications

Teaching and Learning

In my undergraduate teaching, I have been particularly passionate about ensuring that students feel fully supported throughout the modules. I have run a successful project funded by Learning and Teaching Services (LeTS) on giving feedback in large-scale, core modules (with Dr R Kirkham). In both Public Law and EU Law, I place great emphasis in understanding the contemporary and political context of the study of Law. I was awarded the title of Senate Fellow in 2010 for my efforts in improve the quantity and quality of feedback on Public Law.

My postgraduate teaching draws strongly on my own research interests in EU Law, in particular on EU External Relations. I am strongly committed to involving postgraduate students as much as possible in the development of my teaching, to ensure it has contemporary relevance as well as drawing on the different experiences and knowledge our students seek to gain in relation to the EU.

The modules I teach are:

Undergraduate Postgraduate and MA
Public Law I Legal Aspects of the European Union's External Relations
Public Law II EU Constitutional Law
European Union Law Judicial Protection in the European Union
Current Issues in EU Law EU Internal Market Law
