Academic Profile

I joined the School of Law in January 2008, after completing my doctorate on Girls and Youth Justice at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge and research posts at the University of Oxford and the Social Research Unit at Dartington.

Prior to my academic career I spent several years as a practitioner in a Youth Offending Team and in the voluntary sector.

Qualifications

Teaching and Learning

My teaching areas closely reflect my ongoing research interests and I am comiitted both to research-led teaching, as well as to involving students in debates and discussion about criminal justice policy and practice issues. In particualr, my current and recent empirical reesarch on the youth justice sytem in England and Wales, provision for women offenders in the community, and youth victimisation and criminalisation, ensure that students' learning is right up-to-date in terms of academic research, theory and policy.

The modules I teach are:

Undergraduate  Postgraduate
Youth Crime and Justice (Convenor) Methods of Criminological Research (Convenor)
Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice
Victimisation, Policing and Crime Prevention

Research Interests

My principle research interests centre on gender, crime and criminalisation, youth justice and desistance from crime.

My first monograph, Offending Girls: Young Women and Youth Justice, was published by Routledge in November 2011. I am currently re-interviewing members of the cohort of young women who were the subjects of Offending Girls to explore their transitions into adulthood and patterns of desistance from, and persistence in, offending.

Member of the Centre for Criminological Research Cluster.
