Academic Profile

I studied law at the University of Athens, before going to Mansfield College, Oxford, to read for a MJur, graduating with a Distinction and was awarded the Herbert Hart Prize for Best Performance in Jurisprudence and Political Theory. I also received a Freshfields Graduate Studentship and a Senior Germaine Scholarship to continue my studies at Brasenose College, Oxford. At Brasenose I obtained a MPhil and a DPhil. My MPhil thesis argued for a value-laden methodology for jurisprudence, and DPhil thesis proposed an understanding of the relationship between courts and the legislature that has important implications in the theory of law and constitutional theory. My doctoral studies were funded by an AHRB Scholarship and a University of Oxford Faculty of Law Graduate Assistance Fund Award.

I joined the School of Law in 2007. Prior to that, I was Hauser Research Fellow at New York University. I am Director of Assessments for the School of Law and convene the Jurisprudence Reading Group.

Qualifications

Teaching and Learning

I firmly believe that jurisprudence is an indispensable component of legal studies. It teaches the value of rigour and trains law students in argument. It also alerts them to the moral and political implications of law. Accordingly, my teaching method is argumentative and geared towards concrete legal and political problems.

The modules I teach are:

Undergraduate Postgraduate and MA
Public Law II International Biolaw
Jurisprudence: Law and Morality Principles of Health Law and Policy
Law and Political Philosophy (Convenor)
The Theory and Practice of the Human Rights Act 1998 (Convenor)

Research Interests

My research focuses on the following issues:

Member of the Sheffield Institute of Biotechnology Law and Ethics (SIBLE) and of the Centre for the Study of Law in Society (CLIS).
