Academic Profile

I became a tutor in 1996 and a post-graduate Lecturer in 1997 at Cardiff University and a Lecturer at Liverpool University in 1999. After almost 10 years teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, I moved to Sheffield to become a Senior Lecturer in 2008.

Qualifications

Recipient of the Hill Taylor Dickinson Prize for outstanding achievement in Commercial and Maritime Law (1996).

Teaching and Learning

My research closely informs my teaching and, as my research area has expanded over the years, I have grown a range of parallel modules and this has developed into launching a new Research Group on Health Law & Policy, as well as designing and delivering a new programme on European Health Law & Policy (both with the invaluable support of colleagues). I encourage interested students to get involved in the new Research Group, keep them posted about relevant conferences and seminars, and I organise events to facilitate networking and enhance their ability to find jobs on leaving us. I am currently in negotiations to launch a Prospectorship programme with Parexel (an International Pharmaceutical Contract Research Organisation) for students commencing the LLM European Health Law & Policy programme in 2012-13.

I am committed to enhancing students’ learning experience while they are with us. I teach both Problem-Solving Learning (traditional) and Problem-Based Learning (life-long skills approach) to enhance the scope for students to excel in their studies. I offer feedback and feed-forward, and utilise a range of techniques to engage students in their studies. I encourage students to critique their reading, including my own research and offer skills support as needed. I teach law, biomedical, science and medical students which permits an energising exchange of skills, knowledge and views.

Research Interests

My main research interests are patenting, regulating biomedicine, pharmaceutical law and regulation and this extends more generally to all intellectual property rights, to the regulation of medical technology; biotechnology applicable to animals and micro-organisms.

Member of the Sheffield Institute of Biotechnology, Law & Ethics.

Welcome Funded Conference 'Understanding Research Ethics Committees: the new regime', a multi-disciplinary conference which assessed RECs from international, European and national perspectives and hosted through the Institute of Medicine, Law & Bioethics. Obtained CPD Accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians for the event (6 CPD points).
Amount: £2,244 received.

Professional Activities/Recognition

My work has been referenced by the President of the European Patent Office in formulating his opinion concerning Human Embryonic Stem Cells (G2/06) on a referral from the Enlarged Board of Appeal in the WARF case.

My first book is cited as core reading by the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office; cited by the core UK textbook: Cornish & Llewelyn 'Intellectual Property: Patents, Copyright, Trade Marks and Allied Rights' (Thomson Sweet & Maxwell); and been favourably reviewed in the [2002] 33(8) IIC. My research publications are referenced in Modern Intellectual Property Law, Catherine Colston and Jonathan Galloway (Routledge Series Text, Abingdon, Oxon, 2010), as well as on the reading lists of various universities for IP module materials (eg. Oxford, Kent, Manchester, etc.). My research is widely referenced by other academics internationally: eg. Human Medical Research (Springer, 2012); Indian Journal of Medical Ethics 2009; Revista Latinoamicana de Bioética, Columbia 2010; The Lancet 2007; The Regulatory Challenge of Biotechnology (Brownsword, Edward Elgar Publishing 2007).
