About the Programme

Entrants to the programme come from a wide range of backgrounds: Many come from a Social Science background, some have qualifying law degrees others have previous experience working in the field as police officers, social workers and probation officers.

There are three possible pathways students can follow:

  • The research training pathway – for students likely to wish to move on to a research degree, such as a PhD
  • The taught course pathway – for students, including practitioners, wanting to learn more about criminology and criminal justice and how criminal justice works round the world
  • The restorative justice pathway – for practitioners, researchers and students who already have at least some knowledge or experience of restorative justice and who wish to develop this further.

All students start in semester 1 with the core modules for the degree and the choice between pathways can be made when students arrive in Sheffield. Information on each pathway, including the modules likely to be available, can be viewed using the links on the right. Our aim is to make this a truly international programme, so we welcome students from the EU and overseas, as well as those who have recently studied in the UK. The programme will also be of interest to criminal justice and restorative justice practitioners and policy-makers who may wish to deepen their knowledge and understanding of recent international developments in the fields of criminology, criminal justice and restorative justice. The programme draws on the internationally regarded expertise of staff within the Faculty, particularly from The Centre for Criminological Research (CCR). The Centre is one of the largest criminology and criminal justice research centres in the UK, and more information about their work can be found on their website which can be accessed using the link on the right.

Why study MAIC at Sheffield?

  • Criminology and criminal justice increasingly have international and comparative dimensions.
  • This masters programme is one of the few to use a comparative and international perspective to explore the key issues.
  • The University of Sheffield is one of Europe's leading centres for Criminology.
  • Criminology has been taught here for over 30 years and the Centre for Criminological Reasearch conducts high quality research funded by research councils, national government departments and international bodies.
  • This is a flexible programme, with a wide range of choice within it, which will allow you to specialise against a background of wider understanding.
  • Although MAIC is not offered on a Part-Time basis, contact time is concentrated over two days, allowing students to organise other commitments around the course.
  • The programme is well linked to the criminology and criminal justice community.
  • Links to the local police force are highlighted in some of the practical empirical work undertaken by our students as part of the programme.

Former MAIC students have gone on to be researchers for government departments, or academics (several now lecture ont he course), many go into the professional social service as police and probation officers and social workers. Recently one our Undergraduates has found work with the UN.
