Taught Masters: Requirements and Application

Selection of candidates is based on academic ability. This is usually decided on the basis of academic performance to date and/or predicted attainment in courses currently being undertaken.

Normally, we only accept candidates with at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or international equivalent) plus supportive references from previous tutors. However, in certain circumstances we may consider candidates who do not meet these minimum requirements.

Students whose first language is not English must have passed IELTS with a minimum average of 7.0, (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component). Please note some programmes have higher IELTS requirements. Please see the individual programme details for further information.

Application Procedure

Whilst many enquirers may wish to discuss their application directly with the School, in all cases a formal application must be made by completing the University's online application form:

Postgraduate Taught online applications

In order to assist the University in making a prompt decision, applicants should include transcripts of their previous qualifications (including English Language ability for international students) and details of the grading/marking schemes used in the assessment of those qualifications.

There is no deadline for applying to become a Postgraduate student, however it is advisable to apply well in advance of your anticipated date of entry, particularly if you are an international student, as there are a number of arrangements to be made before coming to Sheffield.

Please note that applications for the LPC and the GDL are dealt with differently. Further information on how to make an application to one of these programmes can be found using the links below:
