Incoming Exchange Students: Teaching, Assessment and Module Choices
Teaching at Sheffield generally takes the form of a mixture of lectures and seminars. Lecture groups vary in size – from 20 to 350 students.
A seminar group typically consists of 10-20 students – an ideal size to allow for group discussion and interaction. Contact time is on average 12 hours per week, however we expect that most of your learning time is spent on self-study and research in preparation for lectures and seminars. Attendance at seminars is monitored and all exchange students are expected to attend – and participate in –all sessions.
Assessment methods vary enormously within the School of Law according to the subject studied. You may be assessed by written examination, coursework, on your work within a group. Further information on the particular method of assessment for the modules you are studying can be found in the module description.
A list of available modules for exchange students will be released around May each year and will be available for you to download from this page once it has been released. Before you consider which modules you would like to take, please read 'Important notes about module choices' carefully.
Erasmus/exchange students are expected to choose from the list of Undergraduate modules. Exceptionally, if you have completed at least three years of Law study and if you have a very advanced level of English, you may request to study Postgraduate modules. The availability of these modules may depend on the agreement of your home university.
You are required to study 60 Sheffield Credits (= 30 ECTS Credits) per semester. You may be allowed to register for a minimum of 40 Sheffield Credits (= 20 ECTS Credits) if you can provide written authorisation for this from your home university. Under no circumstances will you be permitted to register for more than 60 Sheffield Credits per semester/120 Sheffield Credits per year. Most undergraduate modules are 20 Sheffield credits (= 10 ECTS).
A typical undergraduate module consists of 3 hours of lectures per week and six seminars of one hour each. You will be directed to material to read for each seminar and you are expected to participate fully.
Some modules have pre-requisites and you should read what these are. They are there to help you choose modules that are suitable for you. You will not be offered a place on a module for which you do not have the pre-requisites. If you have questions about choosing modules, please contact us at: law.exchanges@sheffield.ac.uk
Your module choices are subject to approval by our Director of Law Exchange Programmes. You will need to complete the online module choice form by 30th May whether you are studying here for the first semester, second semester or a full year. You will be able to access the online module choice form from this page when the list of available modules is released.
It is essential that your home university approves your module choices before you return the form to us.
When you arrive at Sheffield, your registration form will detail all the modules you will study and this will be signed by the Director of Law Exchange Programmes. After the beginning of the semester, changes to modules can only take place in exceptional circumstances.
