Tony Harcup has more than 25 years´ experience as a journalist in both alternative and mainstream print media within the UK. He is the author of Journalism: Principles and Practice (Sage, 2004) and is currently writing a book exploring the ethical dimensions of journalism. His research on news values, on alternative media, and on journalistic ethics has been published in both Journalism Studies (Routledge) and Journalism (Sage).

Tony has a long history of activity within the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and has been elected to the union´s Professional Training Committee. He holds a Masters degree in Cultural Studies from Leeds Metropolitan University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from the Open University.

He joined the Department of Journalism Studies at the University of Sheffield as a senior lecturer in 2005, moving from Trinity and All Saints College in Leeds.
