Sheffield student joins the UN in Bangkok
One of our MA in Global Journalism students, Liu Xu, is joining the United Nations in Bangkok as part of their internship programme.
She won the placement as a public information officer at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) office in Bangkok, Thailand, despite fierce competition from hundreds of applicants from all over the world.
“This is an excellent opportunity and I am very happy to have been given the opportunity to take this first step into my professional career”, said Liu Xu.
Ms Liu won the competition after presenting a proposal on how to improve the visibility of UNESCAP by combining communication strategies that took into account mass media, advertisement on social media.
During her internship in UNESCAP, Liu Xu will assist the information services of the UN by preparing the daily UNESCAP Information Services Morning News Headlines product, preparing the multimedia public information of ESCAP, including presentation, slide shows and video production, providing assistance in editing, producing and creating film, videos, mix sound and diaporamas, assisting in the preparation of briefing sessions on the work of ESCAP and other UN agencies for ESCAP’s Visitors’ Programme, among other activities.
Established in 1947 with its headquarters in Bangkok, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region.
With a membership of 62 Governments, 58 of which are in the region, and a geographical scope that stretches from Turkey in the west to the Pacific island nation of Kiribati in the east, and from the Russian Federation in the north to New Zealand in the south, ESCAP is the most comprehensive of the United Nations five regional commissions. It is also the largest United Nations body serving the Asia-Pacific region with over 600 staff.
