Jonathan Foster named Teacher of the Year

Jonathan Foster has been named Teacher of the Year in the first Academic Awards organised by the University of Sheffield Students’ Union.
The awards ceremony on Thursday May 12 was devised by the Union to recognise that “good teaching has an enormous positive impact on the learning experience and that this should be celebrated”.
The Union received 360 nominations from students for awards in 17 categories.
One of Jonathan’s citations stated: “At the risk of sounding like a massive cliché, he is one of those teachers I will never forget. He taught me everything I know about Journalism, helped me land a job before I had even graduated, and three years since graduating still helps me with my career.”
The journalism department boasted another success - Katie Stewart was nominated for Personal Tutor of the Year, but she was pipped at the post.
Jonathan said: "It's deeply satisfying to be saluted by the students, especially as we
place so much priority in the journalism department on the high quality
of our teaching."
Jonathan joined the Department Of Journalism Studies in 1995 from the staff of The Independent, where he was north of England correspondent.
He has also worked on the Sheffield Morning Telegraph, the Sunday Times, and the Observer.
He covered the 1984-85 miners´ strike, reported extensively on Liverpool politics, filed exclusive stories
on the conflicts in Northern Ireland and southern Africa, revealed the 'Supergun' arms trade and wrote widely on the James Bulger murder case.
