16 October 2007 Dom nominated in Guardian Student Media AwardsA Sheffield Journalism Studies student has been nominated for this year’s coveted Guardian Student Media Awards. |
Dom Howson, 20, is in contention for the Student Sports Writer of the Year gong after submitting three sport features from Sheffield Steel Press back in June. |
The Huddersfield-born journalist will compete in the individual category against four other nominees in next month’s award ceremony, which takes place on November 21. The winner of the prestigious prise receives £500 spending money along with a week’s work experience on the sports desk at the Guardian. |
Howson, the current Sports Editor of the Union paper, follows in the footsteps of former Journalism Studies student Felicity Hay, who was voted best News Writer in 2005. |
“It came completely out of the blue. Paul Whyatt (fellow Journalism Studies Student) phoned me up from the office last Monday to tell me the good news – I thought he was pulling my leg initially! |
“Hopefully I can do myself and the paper proud and comeback with the award. We will just have to wait and see what happens on the night.” |

Ex University of Sheffield student Emeka Ene is up for Feature Writer of the Year while Sheffield Steel Press is also up for newspaper and website of the year. |
