A New Centre for Arts and Humanities

The Jessop Development
(L-R) The Soundhouse, The Jessop Building and Jessop West

The University of Sheffield prides itself on innovative architecture, sympathetic restoration and practical construction. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Jessop Development where old and new architectural styles merge in an exciting collection of buildings for the new Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The new development consists of three buildings, The Jessop Building, The Soundhouse and Jessop West. The magnificently restored and renovated Jessop Building, originally the Jessop Hospital for Women, will be the new home for the Department of Music. The Soundhouse, a uniquely clad building which will house ultra-modern practice studios, rehearsal rooms and recording facilities is also a dedicated space for the Department of Music.

The innovatively designed Jessop West building is state-of-the-art and designed to maximise energy efficiency. Jessop West houses the Department of History, the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics and the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics, in addition to the new University Visitor Centre and an ACS Café. The new buildings are in close proximity to other Arts and Humanities departments, such as Biblical Studies, Philosophy, Archaeology and the Humanities Research Institute.
