Teaching
I am coordinator of five undergraduate and postgraduate courses: Information Retrieval (UG and PGT), Database Design (UG and PGT); and Information Systems in Healthcare (PGT). I teach mainly on the more technical aspects of information management and am interested particularly in the representation and storage of data and information.
Professional standing
- Member of RIN (Research Information Network)
- Member of the CLEF (Cross Language Evaluation Forum) steering committee
Research interests
My research interests mainly revolve around developing technologies to assist people with accessing and managing information. Much of my research has focused on Information Retrieval (IR) of natural language texts within various domains and contexts, such as Multilingual Information Retrieval, Text-Based Image Retrieval, Geographic Information Retrieval and user- and system-oriented evaluation of IR systems. A theme of my research has been to create re-usable resources (corpora and test collections) for the wider research community. A substantial amount of research has involved non-academic institutions or industrial collaborators, including the UK Press Association, Ordnance Survey, the UK National Archives, OCLC Inc., Alinari, the Netherlands Sound and Vision Archives, Press Association Images and Tate Online. U have co-authored a textbook on multilingual information retrieval and written over 80 peer-reviewed publications in my research area. I have been Principal Investigator in three EU-funded projects: PATHS, MultiMatch and Memoir and overall coordinator of an international evaluation campaign for image retrieval systems called ImageCLEF.
