There are a number of professional bodies in the library and information work area, all of which are good sources of information about careers and jobs in the sector. Graduate Training Opportunities
The Graduate Training Opportunities Scheme is particularly useful for graduates looking for one year pre-library school graduate trainee posts in library and information services in academic, national and public libraries, as well as information services within the government sector and the business and commercial sectors. These posts generally start in the Autumn and last for up to one year, and are therefore aimed particularly at applicants intending to go on and apply for postgraduate courses in library and/or information studies which require relevant previous work experience. Note - Scheme vacancies information is updated in October of each year.
The Career Development Group of CILIP is another useful source of information for students. It produces a regular journal called Impact and also organizes seminars, workshops and conferences on topics related to careers and jobs in the Library and information profession.
