The University of Sheffield
Information School

The best information school there is

Students in one of the iSchool's computer labsThe Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) looks at the quality of research conducted by all universities in the UK. The first exercise took place in 1989. In that first set of RAE results, the Information School at the University of Sheffield was awarded the top rating in our field.

In the most recent RAE, in 2008, we came out on top again. Two thirds of our research was judged to be either 'internationally excellent' or 'world-leading'.

And in all the other research assessments in between – in 1992, 1996 and 2001 – we were also awarded the highest possible ranking. No other library and information management department, in any UK university, can match the dominance we've achieved in our field.

So study with us and you'll join the school that's been Britain's leading research centre in information for more than 20 years.

Our research

Everyone's talking about us

Year after year we're ranked in the top two by the leading independent university guides in the UK. The Information School at Sheffield scores 97 out of 100 in the Times Good University Guide 2012, and 99 out of 100 in the Complete University Guide 2012.

But what do students say? The University of Sheffield as a whole ranked very highly in the 2012 National Student Survey – showing that our undergraduates are among the happiest in the country. And at the Information School, 95 per cent said they were satisfied with the quality of their course – more than almost any other information school in the UK.

And remember...

It's not just our school that's the best. The University of Sheffield is the THE University of the Year 2011, and a world-class community of learning. We're based right in the heart of a pulsating modern city that offers the UK's greatest student experience – for lifestyle, culture, affordability and a friendly welcome. And the Students' Union has been voted the best in Britain too.
