The University of Sheffield
Information School

Fifty Years of the Information School.

The School has recently been honoured with a Special Issue of Library Trends to commemorate our 50th year leading the field of Information Science.

This follows the Special Issue of the Journal of Information Science which was published earlier this year.

Throughout the last 50 years we have achieved considerable success in terms of research, notably attaining the highest level in each of the national research assessments since the 1980s as well as pioneering innovative teaching programmes.

Founded in 1963 as the Postgraduate School of Librarianship, it was only the second University school of its kind in the UK.  In 1967 the School changed its name to the Postgraduate School of Librarianship Information Science, and again in 1981 to the Department of Information Studies. Three years ago in 2010 the name changed to the current Information School, following our joining the international iSchools movement.

You can find out more about the School since its founding on our history page.

To celebrate the milestone we’re planning a range of events for everyone connected with the School and we hope you’ll be able to join in.  Please see the table below for more details.   Also watch out for virtual events in Second Life and our regular seminar series.
