World Food Festival 2007

World Food Festival 2007 was organised on campus in November by the International Students Committee (ISC), the representative body of international students at The University of Sheffield. The event brought together different dishes from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and South America.

Different societies were chosen to participate to enable people to indulge in their fascinating and diverse dishes, from main courses, drinks, and deserts. It was not merely the variety of food that made that night memorable. It was the spirit of having all the societies come together to present their national dishes and work jointly to illustrate the beauty of diversity not only in dishes, but in cultures and traditions.

The participating societies this year were:
• Chinese
• Latin American
• Sri Lankan
• Kazakh
• Pakistani
• Vietnamese
• Malaysian
• Japanese
• Greek
• Korean
• Indonesian
• Omani

The Jordanian Society also contributed to the glamour of the night by setting up a stall with sheesha, Arabic coffee, Jordanian deserts and music.

The societies’ stalls were marked by judges for their presentation of the food, the variety, and the quality of main dishes and desserts. This year the Omani Society won first place for both the main dishes and desert stalls, having impressively set up their stall with fascinating Arabic dishes and desserts which was supplemented with their remarkable hospitality and warm enthusiasm.

After indulging in innumerable cuisines and desserts, the event was followed by entertainment at the University’s Octagon Centre, where different traditional performances took place, from samba to belly dancing, followed by a disco till 2 am. Everyone who came enjoyed the night with various music hits and genres.

The night was certainly one of the year’s highlights, and the event’s success, selling over 1000 tickets, was proof of the hard work of the international students.
