Sheffield students´ union wins top award

The University of Sheffield´s Union of Students has been named the `Higher Education Union of the Year´ at the first-ever National Union of Students' (NUS) Awards, which were held in Birmingham in June.

The accolade, which was one of ten awards presented, recognises outstanding achievement in a Higher Education students´ union through excellence in participation, strong democratic structures and effective strategic planning.

The is the second award the Union has won in the last year, after being named 'The Best Students' Union in the UK,' by trade magazine Club Mirror in November. The Union has also been voted `Best Students´ Union in Britain´ by the Virgin Alternative Guide.

Mark Willoughby, President of the Union of Students at the University of Sheffield, said: "Winning this award is a fantastic achievement. This award is particularly satisfying as it reflects the national student movement acknowledging us to be the best union. It also demonstrates the rewards that can be gained through excellent collaboration between student leadership and staff support."

The Union of Students at the University of Sheffield is located on Western Bank, Sheffield. It offers a wide range of services to staff and students, including bars, clubs, cafe, shops and employment services. It has the largest activities programme in the UK and represents the 24,000 students studying at the University.
