University concert season has international flare
A fascinating fusion of Spanish and Indian music will open the University of Sheffield´s Spring concert season next week. The concert, which will take place on Tuesday 10 February 2009, will feature a performance by one of the world´s great guitar virtuoso´s Eduardo Niebla and his established Trio.
Eduardo Niebla, who performed at the Greek Olympic Games, and has previously worked with George Michael and Belinda Carlisle, will blend his style of gypsy jazz combined with Indian tones, with the sounds of world class tabla player, Dharmesh Parmer.
The concert, which will take place at the University´s Firth Hall, marks the first of thirteen evening concerts open to members of the public over the next few months.
The season has an international flare to it this year and will feature an array of music from around the world. This will include the London Uyghur Ensemble´s performance of music and dance from North West China and the Songmen of Sheffield Cathedral Choir as they present a programme of French choral music.
The season will also commemorate the 200th anniversary of German Romantic composer, Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn and the 350th anniversary of English Baroque composer, Henry Purcell. The Rivoli Quartet, coached by local legend Peter Cropper, and Benjamin Frith, a leading pianist of his generation, will perform the music of Mendelssohn at two separate concerts during the season. The Rose Consort of Viols, described as one of the finest early music groups in Europe, will present a performance of Purcell´s music.
In addition to the evening concerts, a series of Free Lunchtime Concerts will commence at 1.10pm on Thursday 12 February at the University Drama Studio on Shearwood Road, which are also open to members of the general public.
