Sonal's Web Diary

This year I celebrated Diwali similarly to last year by going to Moonlights.

Moonlights is an event held every year by the Hindu Students Forum in the Octagon. The night starts off with a prayer and aarti which is a Hindu ritual where light from wicks soaked in ghee (purified butter) or camphor is offered to the gods and goddesses. Following the prayer there is Indian music and dandiya which is an Indian dance.

Students from all over England come to Sheffield to come to this night! This year as it was the 10th annual Moonlights the society had Jay Sean as a guest performer.

I thoroughly enjoy Moonlights as it gives me a chance to express the Indian side of me. It is nice to be able to have an Indian night out with the music, food and of course the clothes. This year I wore a saree and also 2 of my flatmates came with me so they also dressed up in my salwar kameez.

I suggest that anyone interested come to the night as it a good night just to remind you of your own home and culture or a unique opportunity to experience another culture.
