Sheffield Snooker City Celebrations

The World Snooker Championship returns to Sheffield’s world-famous Crucible Theatre for the 30th year running, from Saturday 19 April to Monday 5 May.

To celebrate the occasion there is a wealth of events in the City Centre as part of the annual Sheffield Snooker City festival, organised by Sheffield City Council and World Snooker. It will include a big screen outside the Crucible, a Global Market, city centre walking tours, brand new street entertainers and circus performances, and a ’snooker for all’ tournament.

Tudor Square, home to the Crucible Theatre, will be turned into a snooker village in honour of the tournament. The Big Screen will be in the square for the duration of the Championship broadcasting all the tabletop action live from the Crucible. The grassed area in the square will house the CueZone exhibition marquee, where people can learn more about the history, science and stars of the game.

There will be a five-day Global Market on Fargate with food and produce from around the globe to complement the World Championship. On the finals weekend there will be a unique new acrobatics performance in the Winter Garden, created exclusively for the festival. There will also be street entertainers animating the city centre.

Sheffield and the city’s Crucible Theatre are known worldwide as the ‘home of snooker’, having hosted the World Championship since 1977. This relationship has strengthened with the creation of a World Snooker Academy at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield nurturing champions of the future.

Sheffield boasts a staggering array of world class sporting facilities, achievements and personalities. As well as being the home of snooker, Sheffield has two professional football teams, a podium full of international athletes, as well as an enviable calendar of major sporting events in the city each year.
