Islamic Circle spends week supporting local community

Students from the University of Sheffield´s Islamic Circle held a week-long series of outreach events from 15-20 March 2010 to give something back to their local community and highlight the peaceful nature of their religion.

Students took part in a series of events from working with children to helping the environment. They also held several collections for the Sheffield´s Children´s Hospital Scanner Appeal. The activities aimed to draw attention to the importance of charity in the Muslim faith, and urge all Muslims to donate generously for the welfare of their community.

On Tuesday, a group of students from a range of different courses visited the Yemeni Community Association´s Firvale Centre for a day, and held 10 minute activity stations with children from the Centre. The day was designed to introduce youngsters to the different courses on offer at universities to raise their awareness of Higher Education.

Activities included tree planting and hibernacula building at Shire Brook Valley Local Nature Reserve and spending the day doing henna and calligraphy with socially vulnerable people who attend St Wilfrid´s Centre, which provides support for homeless people.

Hafsah Qureshi, Vice-President of the Islamic Circle, said: "The University of Sheffield´s Islamic Circle wanted to start up a new event this year to give students the opportunity to give something back to the community. Being a good citizen is a vital teaching of our religion and as a society, we wanted give our members the opportunity to give their time to the community, and we hope it this will encourage them to participate in volunteering activities on a regular basis."
