Information Commons now open

The University of Sheffield’s state-of-the-art Information Commons building is now open.

Information Commons

The impressive £23m library is creating a new learning experience for staff and students, who will benefit from integrated access to printed and digital learning resources and IT facilities, twenty four hours a day.

The facility is providing the latest IT resources, including over 500 PCs, wireless networking and IT equipped classrooms; well-equipped spaces for teaching, learning and study; and 100,000 of the most in-demand books, along with a 70-seat café.

The building provides a learning environment specially designed to meet the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate taught students at the University. Extended opening hours mean that students can study at the times and at the pace that suits them.

The Information Commons covers seven floors and has over 8,000 m2 of usable space and over 1300 study spaces, increasing the quality and quantity of independent study space at the University.

Paul White, Pro- Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at the University of Sheffield, said: "We are extremely proud to have opened this wonderful new learning centre and to be offering our students such superb facilities. The Information Commons is a fantastic addition to our campus. It will help us maintain our position as a leading UK university and support the needs of our students in the 21st century."
