Source: Sheffield Star, 22 April 2009
Fusion IP, a spin-out company from the University of Sheffield, is quoted in new research which puts Yorkshire and Humber at the forefront of the UK’s latest advances in healthcare technologies.
The research, commissioned by Grant Thornton and carried out by the Library Group, takes a comprehensive look at the investment history and opportunities in the region's healthcare technologies sector.
The research shows that Yorkshire and Humber has the highest concentration of medical device companies in the UK, with over 200 firms employing 7,000 staff and with sales in excess of £450 million.
And it quotes Sheffield company Fusion IP – which commercialises university research – as among the leading organisations from the sector, in the region.
Researchers say Yorkshire and Humber is following hot on the heels of the well-known biotech regions in the rest of the UK and Germany and is placed eighth in the rankings of investments and deals done.
Their report also concludes that there is a great level of activity stemming from Yorkshire's universities including 17 active venture capital backed healthcare technology university spin outs.
