Happy Chinese New Year!
We would like to wish all our Chinese friends, colleagues, students and applicants a happy and prosperous New Year!
People from all walks of life in Sheffield will enjoy the events planned throughout this week to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Sheffield’s Chinese community welcomed the New Year early when various organisations, including the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), staged a spectacular New Year concert on Monday at Sheffield City Hall. The Lion dancing team were out in full force outside City Hall to welcome the New Year and visitors were provided with an evening of culture, music, dance and arts performances. Sheffield Students’ Union’s Give It A Go scheme is offering the chance for students to experience Manchester’s Chinese New Year celebrations on Sunday 10 February.
Plans are now also being drawn up for Sheffield’s own Chinatown. Chinese community leaders are working with the council to try to establish a Chinese district in the city, possibly around the London Road area. A three-and-a-half acre site has already been identified and a feasibility study was carried out last year, which found there was huge support for the idea in the city's Chinese and business communities.
Chinese students play a major role in many of the national, cultural, social and sporting societies at Sheffield but there are two student societies in particular that are popular with Chinese students studying here. The Chinese Society is very active and has been involved in events including the International Cultural Evening, while the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), supported and sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in the UK, has over 1000 members.
