Sonal's Web Diary

The summer holidays already seem like a distant memory to me. I have just started on my second week in paediatrics and so far I am enjoying it!

I always thought that paediatrics would be one of the hardest modules because it is not easy to get children to cooperate but how wrong I was. I have met some of the loveliest, cooperative children who also have a strong sense of curiosity and like making friends. Parents of the children are also very supportive & encouraging and seeing such a 3-way interaction between parent, child & doctor is unique to paediatrics.

Paediatrics is a difficult branch of medicine as it encompasses a wide age range and each age group has conditions & diseases particular to them. From the moment children are born till the age of 18 years old it is the paediatrician’s job to look after these children. This varies from congenital problems, genetic disorders to more general conditions such as asthma, infections etc.

For the first time I have done 2 whole on calls from the hours of 9am – 9pm and I never realised how draining it is. As summer leaves us and autumn approaches the pattern of admissions also changes with many more children coming with respiratory exacerbations of asthma, croup, bronchiolitis etc. Over the remaining 5 weeks on this rotation I am expecting to see a variety of different conditions and am excited to face the new learning opportunities that come my way.
