Work during your studies

If you are studying in the UK you can work up to 20 hours per week during your studies and full-time during the vacations. It is very common to see international students take up part-time work opportunities but as you come to the UK to study your first priority should always be your studies and many students do quickly realise that it is not always possible to combine part-time work with a demanding full-time study. You should also never come to the UK depending on income received through work to pay for your studies.

University of Sheffield students can choose to do a one year work placement as part of their undergraduate degree programme. A Degree with Employment Experience offers the opportunity to further develop your knowledge, skills and understanding within an employment context.

University Careers Service

The Careers Services provides support, guidance and information and a vacancy and work experience service to all our undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as recent graduates of the University.

From general guidance on how to apply for jobs, how to conduct yourself at a job interview, how to fine-tune your CV to help in general career planning, the Careers Service organises a wide range of activities to help you develop your career during and after your studies.

The Careers Service

Jobshop

The Jobshop is run by the Careers Service in association with the Students' Union. It is based between SSID and New Leaf within the Union. You can visit the Jobshop to look for part-time jobs and work experience. Our shop window displays the most recent part-time jobs including those from the university and the Students' Union. The Jobshop team can help with finding work and provide information about getting a National Insurance Number.

Recruitment and career fairs

Each year the University organises a Career Fair. During the fair you can meet and speak to prospective employers and learn more about the requirements to be successful in looking for work in various industries and therefore it will help you assess your suitability for the job market. There is also a special Sheffield Legal Fair for those seeking employment in the legal industries.

Careers information day

An information event where you can talk informally to representatives in over 60 graduate occupations, ranging from accountancy to social work. The organisations are not there to recruit, but to answer your questions and provide you with an insight into different occupational areas.
