Entry requirements for students from Kenya

We have been welcoming students from Kenya for many years and our staff are very familiar with the Kenyan education system and qualifications.

High entrance requirements for our degree programmes at Sheffield reflect the quality of the University.

All applicants are required to have an internationally recognised English language qualification such as IELTS or TOEFL. The minimum score that is accepted for entry is IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. Some departments may require a higher score.

Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) English at Grade B or GCSE/IGCSE English at Grade C or above are accepted in place of IELTS or TOEFL

The following information is for guidance only.

For Entry to Undergraduate Programmes e.g. BSc, BA, BEng/ MEng

A variety of qualifications can be considered for direct admission to undergraduate bachelor degree programmes. All applications for undergraduate programmes should be made through UCAS.

A Level

Applicants with a minimum of 3 A levels will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

International Baccalaureate

Applicants with a minimum of 28 points will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

NCUK International Foundation Year

The University is a member of the Northern Consortium (NCUK). NCUK offers an International Foundation Year (IFY) in Kenya at Brookhouse School, Nairobi. Students who have completed the IFY programme and have achieved the required academic will be considered for admission to undergraduate programmes.

Other Qualifications:

Applicants who wish to transfer from an undergraduate programme in Kenya will be considered for undergraduate Year 1 entry with strong KCSE grades and high grades in their undergraduate programme in Kenya.

Sheffield International College

Sheffield International College provides undergraduate foundation programmes specifically designed for students seeking entry into the University of Sheffield.

For Entry to Postgraduate Taught Programmes e.g. MA, MSc

Holders of a good bachelor degree from a recognised Kenyan university and KCSE English grade B or above will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or masters programmes.

Applicants who do not have KCSE English grade B or above will be required to achieve a minimum of IELTS 6 (with at least 5.5 in each component) or TOEFL Internet Based 80 (with at least 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking ).  Some departments may require a higher score.

For Entry to MBA

Holders of an good bachelor degree from a recognised Kenyan university, at least 3 years´ post-graduation work experience and KCSE English grade B or above will be considered for direct admission. Applicants must be at least 25 years old by the time the programme starts.

Applicants with lower class second degree and considerable work experience may be considered.

Applicants who do not have KCSE English grade B or above will be required to achieve a minimum of IELTS 7.

Sheffield International College

Sheffield International College provides pre-Masters programmes specifically designed for students seeking entry into the University of Sheffield.

For Entry to Postgraduate Research Programmes e.g. MPhil, PhD, PhD with Integrated Masters

Holders of a good bachelor degree and a good masters degree from a recognised Kenyan university and KCSE English grade B or above will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes

Applicants who do not have KCSE English grade B or above will be required to achieve a minimum of IELTS 6 (with at least 5.5 in each component) or TOEFL Internet Based 80 (with at least 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking ). Some departments may require a higher score.
