Biography

I graduated in medicine from Queens University Belfast in 1983. I was awarded an ARC Clinical Fellowship for a PhD thesis entitled 'Role of TNF polymorphism in rheumatoid arthritis' which I undertook at the University of Sheffield and successfully completed in 1995. I was subsequently awarded an ARC Copeman Fellowship for research at Stanford University.

I am currently Professor in Rheumatology and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist.

Research Interests

My research interests include the genetic background of rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterised by joint inflammation which frequently leads to joint damage, significant morbidity and increased mortality. The aetiology is multifactorial with a substantial genetic contribution. I am also interested in pharmacogenetics, specifically the identification of biomarkers predictive of response to Methotrexate and anti-TNF.

Teaching Interests

I lecture on the MBChB undergraduate medical course and am the Rheumatology Phase 3b co-ordinator.
