Welcome

The Department of Infection and Immunity is led by Professor Moira Whyte and combines basic science research in molecular cell biology, with a particular focus on innate immunity in Respiratory Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Renal Medicine, Rheumatology and Dermatology. The department is based within the Medical School and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. There is access to core facilities in proteomics and genomics, high quality Cell Biology, Containment Level 2 and 3 laboratories. Our clinical base is at both the Royal Hallamshire (Infectious Diseases, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Dermatology) and Northern General (Renal Medicine) Hospitals.

Our Research

Our Academic Units form the core of our research activities. They comprise both academic and clinical academic principal investigators with complementary research interests. Our Teaching

Members of our department are actively involved in graduate and postgraduate teaching and research and host more than ?50 PhD/MD and MSc/BMedSci candidates for the duration of their studies. Linda Kay attended the European Histamine Research Society (EHRS) meeting in Belfast (2-6 May) and co-chaired the session 'Mast cells and inflammation' with Professor Wilfried Lorenz. She was awarded 3rd prize for her poster entitled 'Characterization of the EP receptor expressed by human lung mast cells using novel EP recepor antagonists' based on work undertaken with Peter Peachell.
