What's On? - Events & Exhibitions at ICOSS

ICOSS is the home of Social Science in Sheffield and as such we play host to a wide range of events from across the faculty and aim to run Social Science themed exhibitions every month. While many of the meetings held here are private, project-related or invitation only, there are lots of others open to academics, researchers and students from across the university. Below are details of upcoming events and exhibitions at ICOSS which may be of interest to, and open to, a wider audience:

Centre for the Study of Journalism & History4-5 JULY 2013 - Conference: "Redefining Journalism in the Era of the Mass Press"

The Centre for the Study of Journalism & History hosts a 2 day conference seeking to interrogate change and/or continuity in the role perceptions of journalism that occurred between 1880 and 1920 with the rise of the mass press. The way we speak of and interrogate this period continues to exert great influence in terms of how we understand contemporary journalism, and how we conceptualize the role of the journalist in terms of its historical, cultural and economic development.

The conference takes place at ICOSS on the Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July. For further details, including programme, please visit the Centre's website: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/journalismhistory/news

ICOSS Workshop: Doing better research17 JULY 2013 - Workshop: "Scoping out your research grant proposal: broad and/or narrow?"

Drawing upon the wealth of experience of the Faculty's Advanced Fellows, ICOSS is launching a "Doing Better Research: 4@4" series of workshops. The first of these will take place on Wednesday 17th July and is titled "Scoping out your research grant proposal: broad and/or narrow?"

The 4 presenters for this session will be:
Professor Peter Jackson (Geography)
Dr Lorna Warren (Sociological Studies)
Professor Aki Tsuchiya (Economics)
Professor Colin Williams (Management School & ICOSS)

"We all often have difficulties deciding whether to frame our research proposal very narrowly, or whether to pitch it in a broader manner of wider relevance. This workshop brings into the open this little discussed issue which we all confront when grant writing. Each presenter will provide a 5 minute presentation on how they have sought to address this issue when framing grant proposals followed by an open discussion."

This workshop takes place 4-5pm in the ICOSS Boardroom. It is intended to continue the discussion afterwards in the Red Deer pub (Pitt Street).

To book a place please contact Jayne Parkin (J.E.Parkin@sheffield.ac.uk)
