The University of Sheffield
Department of Human Metabolism

Overview

The Academic Unit of Bone Metabolism, headed by Professor Richard Eastell includes a clinical research team based in the Clinical Research Facility at the Northern General Hospital (NGH) and the Bone Biochemistry Laboratory, which is housed on D floor at the Medical School. The Unit has long experience and expertise in conducting clinical trials and cohort studies in accordance with UK legislation for clinical research. With access to state-of-the-art technology for the measurement and imaging of bone at the NGH and for the measurement of biochemical markers in the Bone Biochemistry laboratory, the Unit provides a service for both clinicians and academics who wish to undertake high quality musculoskeletal research. The Unit hosts several BMedSci, MD and PhD students and has its own dedicated educational programme to provide generic and subject-specific research training for staff and students alike. The research activities of the Unit are further supported by the Lay Advisory Panel for Bone Research, which is closely involved in project planning and the dissemination of research findings.
