Research within the Department of Human Metabolism

Child Health

Research in the academic unit of child health is concerned with the application of scientific discovery to children's health. Methodologies are applied to a range of specialist clinical areas - bone disease, gastroenterology and cystic fibrosis, respiratory disease, growth disorders and inborn errors of metabolism.

Bone Metabolism

Professor Richard Eastell as the head of the Unit has been developing and expanding the group over the last 17 years. The group now consists of over 30 staff having excellent facilities for both laboratory-based research and clinical research at a new NIHR Bone Biomedical Research Unit at the Northern General Hospital, as well as a dedicated osteoporosis clinical trials unit.

Bone Biology

The Academic Unit of Bone Biology was established in 2003 following the appointment of Peter Croucher to the chair of bone biology. The Unit is based in the newly refurbished Mellanby Centre for Bone Research adjacent to the Sheffield University Teaching Hospital Trust in the Hallamshire Hospital.

Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism

The Academic Unit of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism is divided into three separate areas:

Reproductive & Developmental Medicine

The Academic Unit is located in the Jessop Wing of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and is chaired by Professor Bill Ledger. The Unit itself has extensive modern laboratories with excellent tissue culture suites, new image analysis equipment and a range of molecular biology facilities ensuring a world class research environment is available to all investigators.
